On August 23, 2024, at 12:51 pm, hundreds of civilians, including young children and elderly individuals, gathered on the train station platform in Pokrovsk, Ukraine, to flee the city as Russian forces advanced.
Pokrovsk has come under repeated Russian attack in recent weeks. A Ukrainian soldier stationed in the city told the BBC's Ukrainecast podcast that the Ukrainians must defend a critical front in their country's east, including Pokrovsk, while trying to press forward in western Russia.
The civilians, carrying heavy suitcases and small children in their arms, boarded an evacuation train to escape the ongoing conflict.
